3 Things You Should Know Before You Go For Epoxy Flooring For Your Garage

Epoxy floor coating has been recently circulating around social media. We’ve seen many videos of contractors documenting themselves in the process of creating metallic and flake finishes and I must say the process is hypnotizing.

Even if I know how to do epoxy flooring watching someone else do the floor is pleasing to me.

And due to the hype in social media, more and more people are interested in getting their garage floor covered with epoxy. And I hope you really do it because epoxy coated floors last longer and look beautiful.

But before you go and do it, here are some things you should know before you go for epoxy flooring for your garage (or any part of your home).

1. There is a recommended curing period.

The curing period of epoxy flooring is 24-72 hours.

During this period, it is recommended that the floor (or surface) is left alone so that the chemical reactions can fully take effect. Using the flooring during this time may lead to poor results in the end.

We want to avoid faulty, cracked and not smooth floor because we didn’t properly follow the recommended curing period.

2. Preparation is needed.

Planning ahead is the key to a successful application of epoxy coating to your floor.

Before the actual application of the chemical, problems on the floor should be taken care of. For example if there is a big crack on your floor, this should be filled up first to ensure that the epoxy will smooth out evenly. Or if your floor is covered with tiles and other materials not suitable for application of epoxy then you should have taken the time to remove the tiles before you go for epoxy flooring for your garage.

Also there are some chemicals that will need to be poured on the floor prior to the actual application of the resin. And this brings me to my 3rd reason…

3. Have a consultation with your contractor first.

I know many contractors nowadays provide free consultation. If you are going to have your garage done soon, you must take advantage of the free consultation.

From the consultation, you will be able to learn:

  • Total Price of the project
  • How long the project will take
  • What you need to prepare prior to application

I hope this guide helps you choose your epoxy flooring contractor better.

  1. It’s good to know that you should leave the floor alone so it’s not messed up. I’ve been thinking of installing an epoxy floor in my garage so I can work on my antique cars. I’ll be sure to use these tips when I order my epoxy floor.
